Hoyer Statement on Iranian Interim Agreement
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the six month Iranian interim agreement to roll back their nuclear weapons program:
"The United States and its allies are committed to ensuring that Iran neither develops nor has nuclear arms. This interim agreement presents an opportunity for Iran to prove it is serious about working with the West to achieve the dismantling of its nuclear arms program.
"This agreement provides for daily monitoring of whether or not Iran is complying with its obligations. The provisions for monitoring and verification must be closely followed in order to verify Iran's compliance. It is also important that current sanctions that fall outside the scope of this agreement must remain and be strongly enforced.
"While in the end I believe a negotiated agreement is the preferable outcome, the Administration must make it clear that a military option remains on the table. Additionally, I believe the Senate should move forward with the sanctions bill the House recently passed - and include a provision enabling the President to delay their implementation while Iran's compliance with yesterday's agreement proceeds and is verified.
"A final agreement must be reached within the six month time-frame set forth in the agreement. At the same time, the Administration must reassure our regional allies that we remain steadfast in our opposition to the support of terrorism in the region, which Iran has pursued and, in addition, that this interim agreement will be pursued vigorously to achieve a final deal within the next few months that comprehensively ends, removes, and dismantles the means of achieving nuclear weapons."
