Hoyer Statement on Implementation of Mental Health Parity Law WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the Obama Administration’s new rules fully implementing the Paul Wellstone – Pete Domenici Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act of 2008, mandating insurers cover mental health services in the same way they cover physical health services: “The Obama Administration’s new rules requiring parity for coverage of mental health and physical health care services finally ends an unfair disparity in our nation’s health care system. Not only will this ensure that millions of Americans will be able to afford the mental health prevention, diagnosis, and treatment they need, but it will also help reduce the lingering stigma affecting those who suffer from mental illnesses. “I was proud to support the Paul Wellstone – Pete Dominici Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act in 2008, which was sponsored by then-Rep. Patrick Kennedy and enacted into law with bipartisan support. This new set of rules will enable the full realization of that act and uphold our nation’s commitment to helping those with mental illnesses get the treatment and support they deserve.” Visit www.democraticwhip.gov/ for more press, floor and member resources.
