Hoyer Statement on Manufacturing Report
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Institute for Supply Management released its report for September:
“Today’s report from the Institute for Supply Management shows that our manufacturing sector grew last month at its fastest pace in almost two and a half years, only to be rewarded with an unnecessary government shutdown amid damaging sequester cuts. The ingredients for a revitalization of American manufacturing are present, if only Congress would stop undermining economic progress and start capitalizing on it instead. Passing a clean funding measure to end the government shutdown and achieving a big and balanced deficit solution to end the irrational sequester policy – both of which contribute to job-stifling uncertainty – will help us attract the middle-class jobs we need to move our recovery forward.
“A growing manufacturing base means the creation of more high-skill, high-wage jobs for America’s workers. That’s why House Democrats are continuing to advocate for our Make It In America plan, which invests in making our manufacturing sector even more competitive. Our Make It In America plan focuses on four key areas: pursuing a national manufacturing strategy, promoting U.S. exports, encouraging the return of innovation and jobs, and training a twenty-first century workforce. Legislation has been introduced in all four of these areas, including bipartisan bills that reflect a broad consensus as to what Congress can do to help our manufacturing businesses grow and create jobs.
“I urge the House Republican leadership to end its shutdown so Congress can focus on addressing job creation and helping our manufacturing sector compete and succeed.”
