Cuba lifts ban on athletes competing abroad NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Cuba will allow its athletes to play for foreign teams, lifting what was essentially a decades-long ban, according to the Associated Press. The announcement is seen as a measure by Cuba to retain athletes who otherwise might follow others in defecting because of the lure of lucrative contracts abroad. The Communist Party newspaper Granma reported that Cuban athletes will be eligible to play abroad as long as they fulfill their commitments at home, including that they are in Cuba "for the fundamental competitions of the year," the AP quoted it as saying.
