U.N. members reach deal on Syrian disarmament
LONDON (MarketWatch) -- The five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council have agreed on the wording of a resolution on chemical disarmament in Syria. The draft resolution, put forward to the 15-strong Security Council on Thursday night, calls for Syria to destroy its chemical weapons arsenal by the middle of 2014, The Wall Street Journal reported. However, it does not give automatic authority for the use of military force against Syria if Damascus does not comply. This part of the plan is a concession to Russia by the U.S., as is that the resolution does not blame the Syrian government for the August 21 chemical attacks against the country's citizens. The full U.N. Security Council is likely to vote on the draft resolution after the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons has inspected Syria's arsenal, which should begin Tuesday, Reuters reported.
