Smartphone shipments to top 1B this year - IDC SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Global smartphone shipments are projected to grow 40% this year to top the 1 billion unit mark, according to a forecast from IDC on Wednesday morning. The market research firm cited "steep device subsidies from carriers, especially in mature economic markets, as well as a growing array of sub-$200 smartphones" as factors fueling the growth. As far as smartphone operating systems, IDC projected Google's Android platform would end the year with 75.3% of the market, and Apple's iOS platform with 16.9% of the market. Windows Phone from Microsoft is projected to end the year with 3.9% of the global market, though IDC expects that figure to rise to 10.2% by the year 2017 -- mostly at the expense of Android. BlackBerry is projected to end the year with 2.7% of the global market. daily weblog archives www.usdemocrats.com/weblogcompendium usdemocrats.proboards.comtwitter www.twitter.com/usdemocratsgeo information portal www.1t23.com
