U.S. stocks up on global factory activity NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- U.S. stocks opened higher on Tuesday, with September getting off to a better start in the wake of the worst month in more than a year, after positive reports on global manufacturing bolstered sentiment ahead of U.S. factory data. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 80.98 points, or 0.5%, to 14,891.29. The S&P 500 added 15.52 points, or 1%, to 1,648.49.
