He was sworn in on January 6, 2009, succeeding Mark Udall. He is the first openly gay man elected to the House as a freshman.[2] Polis received a Bachelor of Arts in political science from Princeton University after attending the La Jolla Country Day School, and lives in Boulder, Colorado.
