War was already inevitable in 1939, when the design bureau of Dr. -Ing. h.c.F. Porsche, KG, started work on its first panzerkampfwagen. It was natural that Adolf Hitler would ask his favorite engineer, Prof. Ferdinand Porsche-designer of the People's Car, der Volkswagen, and chief engineer of the government-backed Auto Union team which dominated auto racing through the 1930s-to lend his natural talent to tank design. The Army Ordnance Office, the Heereswaffenamt, had issued a requirement for a heavy "breakthrough" tank-surely unnecessary for a purely defensive military, as Germany's was supposed to be-packing a 75mm gun and designated VK3001: Vollkettenkraftfahrzeug (fully tracked experimental vehicle), 30 tons, design #1. The Porsche submission, VK3001(P), was known within the company as the Type 100 or "Leopard " In fact, one month prior to the invasion of Russia, on 26 May 1941, the Waffenamt had issued a requirement for such a tank, designated VK4501. Among others, Porsche and heavy-equipment manufacturer Henschel und Sohn (which had also attempted a VK3001 design) accepted the challenge. At the time, the only urgency was that the new prototypes had to be ready for demonstration by der Führer's next birthday-20 April, 1942. It would take Porsche and Nibelüngenwerke all eleven months. Hitler was already contemplating even more outlandish and impractical panzers. As early as June 1942 he'd personally authorized Porsche to design a new class of tank, the superheavy. The resultant Porsche Typ 205, codenamed Mammut (Mammoth) would mount at least the 128mm cannon (150mm and even 170mm guns were considered) with a 75mm-the heaviest tank gun available at the beginning of the war-as a coaxial secondary armament. Armor was to be on the order of ten inches on the hull front, 9 1/2 inches on the turret face, eight inches elsewhere. As might be expected, Porsche envisioned longitudinal torsion bar suspension, an air-cooled engine and electrical transmission. Over the objections of the Waffenamt, who now took Porsche's ideas with a grain of salt (and in fact embarked on their own superheavy tank project with Henschel, which never reached completion), in August 1943 Hitler gave him the go-ahead to produce prototypes. The French, lured him, his son Ferry and son-in-law Dr. Anton Piëch to France to build some kind of French People's Car, and threw them into prison. French reasoning remains unclear. It's a fact that Dr. Porsche had taken up the cause of French workers at Peugeot when that company was under control of the German SS. Possibly the French auto industry wished to eliminate potential competition? Ferry Porsche, freed early on, continued the company in concert with his sister Louise and raised the million francs bail money by designing a racing car, the Typ 360, for the Italian firm Cistalia. After two years on the lamb the French dropped all charges but never repaid the money. In essence Dr. Porsche had paid a million francs to French courts in 1950's dollars in order to subvert justice, avoid criminal prosecution, personal accountability and subvert proper justice for his participation in war crimes against humanity. In modern days Porsche has re-entered the tank business, producing a small armored weapons carrier much more in keeping with its sports car line. Debate still rages over the chronology of the implementation of the Final Solution. It has been suggested that SS Obergruppenfuhrer Reinhardt Heydrich, chief of the SD and the Gestapo (commonly known as the RSHA or Reich Security Main Office) and Reichsfuhrer SS Heinrich Himmler, head of the SS, were responsible for the change in direction of Nazi ideology in regard to the treatment of the Jewish population after 1941. Some historians, however, believe that only after the start of Operation Barbarossa on June 22, 1941, against Russia, were orders given to Germany's Einsatzgruppen, (extermination squads) to kill all the Jews in the newly conquered territories, (the functionalist argument). Another argument, called (intentionalist) as outlined by historians Yehuda Bauer and Christopher Browning, is that the decision to exterminate the Jewish population was part of a much earlier German plan to destroy the Jews. There is definitely evidence to show that, despite the earlier emphasis on emigration and expulsion of the Jews from Germany and the Reich territories (such as the Madagascar Plan), the Nazis were planning other solutions for their "Jewish problem" even before 1941 and the implementation of the Aktion Reinhardt extermination plan in Poland. As Browning points out in his book, The Final Solution and The German Foreign Office, the senior German officials who later attended the Wannsee conference in Berlin on January 20, 1942, were informed a year earlier of Einsatzgruppen activity. Gestapo chief Heinrich Mueller sent five activity and situation reports to Joachim von Ribbentrop in the foreign office on October 31, 1941, reports that gave details of the execution of approximately 70 to 80,000 Jews by the Einsatzgruppen in the greater Reich territories. These reports prove that for senior officials at the Wannsee conference, it was not the first time they had been exposed to the idea that Endlosung (the Final Solution) now meant, the mass killing, if not the extermination, of the Jewish people. Historian Benno Muller-Hill has recently published an interesting article on the academic qualifications of those who attended the Wannsee conference. The academic background of these individuals is revealing because it shows the strong academic support for the extermination plan. Heydrich had invited 14 people to Wannsee, including seven ministers of state: the minister for the Occupied Eastern Territories, the Interior minister, the minister of the Office of the Four-Year Plan, the minister of Justice, the General Government (controlling - central - southern Poland) minister, the minister of the Foreign Ministry, the Party Chancellory minister and the Reich Chancellery Minister, along with five high ranking SS officers. Heydrich chaired the meeting and discussed the plan to move the Jews from the west to the east where they would be put to work. Any survivors would be, "dealt with appropriately." The problem of Mischlinge (mixed nationality Jews) was also discussed. These details are well known to historians, but as professor Muller-Hill emphasized in his article, seven of the participating ministers held doctoral degrees in law. What is even more surprising is the academic qualifications of Germany's Einsatzgruppenfuhrer (extermination squad leaders). Six of the 15 Einsatzgruppenfuhrer held doctoral degrees; 16 of the 69 Einsatzkommandofuhrer (smaller extermination commando squad) groups held doctoral degrees.7 Dr.Franz Alfred Six, the leader of Vorkommando Moskau of Einsatzgruppe B received his doctorate of philosophy in 1936 from the University of Heidelberg. He taught political science at the University of Konigsberg in 1937 and held the chair of foreign political science at the University of Berlin in 1939. He was also the top Jewish expert for the SD ( Heydrich's secret police).8 In 1941 Himmler gave Franz Six a promotion: "I hereby promote you, effective 9 November 1941 SS Oberfuehrer for outstanding service in the east Einsatz. [Signed H.Himmler] Six was sentenced at Nuremberg in 1948 to 20 years in prison, but was released in 1952 -- even though his Kommando units had murdered and directly ordered the genocide of more than 15,000 people according to the Nuremberg court. It was designed by Porsche and Erwin Komenda (1904-1966), based on the 1932 prototype Kleinauto. Factory construction was halted in 1939 as war began. Only 210 KdF Wagens were built, and only privileged Nazi officials got them. After the war, Volkswagenwerks in Germany, largely destroyed in 1944 by bombing, was offered for sale to, among others, the Ford Motor Company. He was 24. Friends told James Dean that the car was trouble when they saw it - a rare Silver Porsche Spyder, one of only 90 in 1955. Nicknamed "The Little Bastard," the car carried the iconic screen rebel to his grave on September 30, 1955. After the accident, many fans refused to believe Dean was dead. A story circulated that he was still alive although terribly disfigured, and in true urban legend fashion this tale took on a life of its own. I won't go into all the James Dean as a cult idol stuff except to say his mystique has staying power. For example, his tombstone was stolen twice in 1983, and in 1985 had to be replaced because of damage done to it by fans. Seems he was still the popular fellow despite having been dead for three decades. After the tragedy, master car customizer George Barris bought the wreck for $2,500. When the wreck arrived at Barris' garage, the Porsche slipped and fell on one of the mechanics unloading it. The accident broke both of the mechanic's legs. While Barris had bad feelings about the car when he first saw it, his suspicions were confirmed during a race at the Pomona Fair Grounds on October 24, 1956. Two physicians, Troy McHenry and William Eschrid, were both racing cars that had parts from the "Little Bastard." McHenry died when his car, which had the Porsche's engine installed, went out of control and hit a tree. Eschrid's car flipped over. Eschrid, who survived despite serious injuries, later said that the car suddenly locked up when he went into a curve. The car's malevolent influence continued after the race: one kid trying to steal the Porsche's steering wheel slipped and gashed his arm. Barris reluctantly sold two of the car's tires to a young man; within a week, the man was nearly involved in a wreck when the two tires blew out simultaneously. Feeling that the Porsche could be put to good use, Barris loaned the wrecked car to the California Highway Patrol for a touring display to illustrate the importance of automobile safety. Within days, the garage housing the Spyder burnt to the ground. With the exception of the "Little Bastard," every vehicle parked inside the garage was destroyed. When the car was put on exhibit in Sacramento, it fell from its display and broke a teenager's hip. George Barkuis, who was hauling the Spyder on a flatbed truck, was killed instantly when the Porsche fell on him after he was thrown from his truck in an accident. The mishaps surrounding the car continued until 1960, when the Porsche was loaned out for a safety exhibit in Miami, Florida.
