Hoyer Statement on Retirement of Sen. Harkin
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after Senator Harkin announced his intention to retire at the end of the 113th Congress:
"I was saddened to learn that Senator Harkin will be retiring at the close of the 113th Congress. He has been a tireless advocate for Iowa families and for opportunities for all Americans in his nearly four decades on Capitol Hill.
"Senator Harkin has been at the forefront of efforts to ensure equality for all Americans, and I was honored to have worked closely with him in passing the Americans with Disabilities Act in 1990. This groundbreaking law enabled millions to access public accommodations, live more independently, and pursue the education and employment opportunities that enable the American Dream.
“As Chairman of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions, Senator Harkin has also been a champion for education and health care, shepherding through Congress numerous bills to ensure millions of American students have access to high-quality opportunities, strengthen our schools and increase access to affordable health care. Senator Harkin has also been a leader on the issue of preventing child labor around the world, and his work in that area will surely be long remembered after he leaves Washington.
"I join in wishing Senator Harkin all the best as he prepares to return home to Iowa and thanking him for his many years of devoted service to the American people in both chambers of Congress."
