N.Y. near first gun law since Newtown: report from MarketWatch.com - MarketPulse NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Lawmakers in New York State are close to approving the U.S.'s first gun control law following the shooting death of 20 children last month at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. Gov. Andrew Cuomo, D., N.Y., and legislative leaders are near a deal to expand the state's ban on assault weapons as part of a package of changes, according to reports. The law would also cut the legal capacity of gun magazines to seven rounds from 10. State Sen. Thomas Libous, the top deputy in the Republican caucus, told The New York Times that a gun control measure is "something that's going to go forward." Meanwhile, President Barack Obama said the U.S. should enact a federal assault weapons ban. Shares of gun maker Smith & Wesson Holding Co. fell 0.4% while Sturm Ruger & Co. moved up by 0.7%.
