Google to offer free wi-fi in NY neighborhood from MarketWatch.com - MarketPulse SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) - Google Inc. on Tuesday said the company is offering free wi-fi access to the southwest Chelsea neighborhood of New York City, creating what the Internet giant said is the "the first wired neighborhood in Manhattan and the largest contiguous wi-fi network" in the Big Apple. Google said the network will cover all outdoor areas in a 10 city-block neighborhood and will benefit hundreds of thousands of people, including public school students and residents of Fulton Houses, a public housing complex run by the New York City Housing Authority. Google also has about 3,000 employees based in the neighborhood. Mayor Michael Bloomberg is expected to attend the press conference announcing the plan. Shares of Google were last trading down a fraction to $730.14.
