Whip Hoyer Visits New York to View Hurricane Sandy Damage
SIXTH DISTRICT, NY – Today, House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) traveled with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Congressman Gregory Meeks (NY-6) to visit Rockaway Peninsula in Queens, New York, which experienced significant damage from Hurricane Sandy. During the tour, Col. Kent Savre, Commander of the North Atlantic Division of the Corps of Engineers, and Col. Trey Jordan, head of the Corps’ New York Recovery Field Office and Commander of the Baltimore District, briefed Whip Hoyer and Congressman Meeks on the extent of damage and recovery efforts.
“Today, I joined Congressman Meeks and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to view the devastating damage inflicted by Hurricane Sandy on Rockaway Peninsula,” stated Whip Hoyer. “From Rockaway Park to Breezy Point, I saw firsthand the tremendous impact of the storm, which damaged and destroyed hundreds of homes and businesses, as well as infrastructure.”
“I’d like to thank Congressman Meeks for his dedication to helping his constituents rebuild after the storm, as well as Col. Savre and Col. Jordan for their thorough briefing during my visit and commitment to assisting these communities,” continued Whip Hoyer. “As recovery efforts continue, I will be working with the Obama Administration and my colleagues in Congress to ensure that Rockaway Peninsula and other affected communities across the East Coast have the resources needed to clean up and recover.”
Whip Hoyer and Col. Savre began the tour by viewing debris disposal at Floyd Bennett Field while traveling to Jacob Riis Park, where they met Congressman Meeks and Col. Jordan. While at Riis Park, the disposal site for debris on the eastern side of Rockaway Peninsula, Col. Jordan gave a brief overview of the ongoing recovery efforts in the area. Whip Hoyer and Congressman Meeks went on to visit Breezy Point, Queens, which is located on the western end of the Rockaway Peninsula. Breezy Point suffered significant damage due to extensive flooding and a fire on Oceanside Avenue, which destroyed or damaged more than 100 homes. They later visited Neponsit and Neponsit Beach, Rockaway Park, Shore Front Parkway, and Beach 86th Street. Many homes, businesses, and beachside infrastructure were destroyed by flooding in these areas.
