Hoyer Statement on Ruling Against Florida Voter Registration Suppression Law WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the U.S. District Court ruling against Florida's voter registration supression law: “I join in applauding Thursday's ruling striking down Florida’s onerous law that had severely hindered civic organizations, teachers, and other groups from conducting voter registration drives. That law was an example of legislation currently on the books or proposed in a number of states to make it harder for eligible Americans to vote or register to vote – and which have disproportionately harmed minorities, the elderly, and young people. “The right to vote is the tool by which we as Americans secure our liberty and demand accountability from those we elect to represent us at every level. It is crucial, especially with an important election taking place this year, that we make certain that every eligible voter has the opportunity to register, cast a ballot, and have that ballot counted. That is what the Voter Empowerment Act, which I introduced with Civil Rights hero Rep. John Lewis and other Democratic members last month, would do: protect that fundamental right of Americans to participate fully in our representative democracy. I call on the House leadership to take action on this legislation soon.” Visit www.democraticwhip.gov/ for more press, floor and member resources.
