Statement by Ambassador Susan E. Rice, U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations, on the American Agenda for UN Reform Susan E. Rice U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations U.S. Mission to the United Nations New York, NY January 19, 2012
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE The Obama Administration is committed to reforming the United Nations to make it a better forum to advance our interests and values in order to forge a more secure and prosperous world. To date, we have made significant progress, including improving the performance of the troubled Human Rights Council, spearheading a drive for more transparency and accountability in UN agencies, and securing only the second UN budget reduction in 50 years, thus saving U.S. taxpayers an estimated $100 million. The United States has led efforts to build a leaner, more accountable and more effective United Nations. Tomorrow, we will detail our comprehensive agenda for UN reform, highlighting the next steps in our continuing efforts to build a UN better equipped for the 21st Century. I encourage fellow member states, the UN Secretariat, the NGO community and the American public to join us in forging a United Nations that is better equipped to confront the emerging challenges in our rapidly changing world. ###
