Under Secretary of State for Democracy and Global Affairs María Otero to Travel to Indonesia

Under Secretary of State for Democracy and Global Affairs María Otero will travel to Indonesia from July 19 to 25 to lead the Democracy and Civil Society Working Group of the U.S.-Indonesia Comprehensive Partnership’s Joint Commission. She also will engage with senior government officials, civil society leaders and youth on critical topics related to democracy and governance, elections, civilian security, water, human rights, and youth empowerment.
During her visit to Jakarta from July 19 to 21, Under Secretary Otero will deliver remarks and participate in a press availability at the first-ever IKAT-U.S. Partnership Conference, which follows up our shared vision of U.S.-Indonesian NGO cooperation in promoting human rights and democracy in the Asia Pacific Region. She will engage with government officials and civil society on elections, human rights and anti-corruption measures. Additionally, she will make remarks at the Indonesia-U.S. Conference on Cooperating Defendants and will meet with student leaders at Al Azhar University to discuss youth empowerment.
From July 22 to 24, Under Secretary Otero will travel to Bali where she will participate with Secretary Clinton in the U.S. Indonesia Comprehensive Partnership’s Joint Commission and meetings on the margins of the ASEAN Regional Forum, including the Lower Mekong Initiative Ministerial meetings. She will view poverty alleviation efforts and meet with transparency and accountability NGOs during her stay in Bali.
As Under Secretary for Democracy and Global Affairs, Maria Otero oversees the bureaus of Population, Refugees and Migration; Democracy, Human Rights and Labor; Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs; the Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons; and the Office of the Science and Technology Advisor. She also serves as the Special Coordinator for Tibetan Issues.
