Statement by Ambassador Susan E. Rice, U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations, on Security Council Consultations on the Syrian Nuclear Program Susan E. Rice U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations U.S. Mission to the United Nations New York, NY July 14, 2011
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Today the United Nations Security Council met to address the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors' June 9 resolution, which found Syria in noncompliance with its international nuclear obligations. This meeting was an important step by the Council, which should continue to follow this issue. The United States remains gravely concerned by information from today's briefing and from the IAEA Director General's May report. That report confirmed our serious and longstanding concerns about Syria’s compliance with its international nuclear obligations. Syria’s continued refusal to cooperate with the IAEA investigation and efforts to conceal the true purpose of the clandestine nuclear facility at Dair Alzour not only raise serious concerns about Syria’s compliance with its nonproliferation obligations, but threaten international peace and security. The United States strongly urges Syria to uphold its obligations under its IAEA Safeguards Agreement. We hope that Syria will fulfill its May 26 pledge to cooperate with the IAEA and provide the necessary access to all sites and information related to the Dair Alzour investigation. Syria's positive and prompt cooperation with the IAEA would be the best way to resolve outstanding questions about its nuclear program. ###
