A QUESTION/THOUGHT TO YOU, FROM THE ADMINISTRATOR
I would like to make a statement and get your thoughts. On four separate occasions now the Tories have run harsh attack ads (twice on Dion and now twice on Ignatieff). Each of the 4 times, the gap between the Liberals and Tories had been narrowing only for Liberal support to plummet in the polls once the attack ads from the Tories started running.
Now in my view, I am not thrilled with the idea of attacking others for political gain. HOWEVER, I am even less of a fan of having Harper as Prime Minister so when the Liberals have tried to take the high road by airing ads including Michael Ignatieff in the forest, speaking about what should be important to Canadians with nice and friendly music, what happened instead of Liberal support gaining was that the attack ads proved effective and the Liberals lost a lot ground.
(NOTE: 2 separate polls in the past 3 days have now put the Tories at 12 and 14 points ahead of the Liberals with Liberal support as low as 24% and Tory support in majority territory).
So it seems clear to me that attack ads work - whether we like it or not which, in my opinion, puts us at a crossroad. In an ideal world, politics would be nice and fair - but in reality, Harper is neither nice nor fair and he is winning every time the Liberals are bashed over the head by those disgusting, untrue and warped Tory ads.
So my question is this: Do we fight fire with fire and attack back, or do we continue to let history repeat itself, where each time we get enough public support to give Harper a run for his money, we get crushed by Tory commercials that put Harper near a majority?
I'm becoming more convinced the answer is clear - and if the Liberals don't start showing the public the (TRUE) dirty side of Harper and his gang, we are going to live that dirty side with a Harper majority and we will wish we ran those commercials.
The reality is marketing works. We've tried playing nice, but it's time to be realistic if our goal is to put good Liberal policy into government again.
Lastly, remember commercials are expensive, as are elections. Please consider visiting www.liberal.ca and help defeat Harper.
I look forward to your thoughts..
