Gore Lends Major Support For Democratic Party And Candidates ------------------------------------------------------------ Complete text of the press release from the Office Of The Honorable Al Gore
(Nashville, TN) Al Gore announced today his intention to distribute the funds from his remaining political accounts to three major national democratic committees and two state parties. The largest contribution is a gift of $4 million to the Democratic National Committee (DNC) in support of its effort to defeat George Bush in the 2004 presidential election.
"The outcome of this election is extremely important for the future of our country and for all that America stands for. I want to help John Kerry become President and I want to help Democrats retake control of the US Senate and House of Representatives.
"John will be a great President for all Americans, and I want to do everything I can to help him fight against the outrageous and misleading campaign being waged by the Bush-Cheney campaign."
Currently, the General Election Legal and Accounting Compliance fund (GELAC) has a balance of $6.5 million. In addition to the $4 million contribution to the DNC, Gore is contributing $1 million to the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and $1 million to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. A $250,000 contribution will be made to the Tennessee Democratic Party.
In addition, Gore announced today that 100% of the surplus funds in his "Recount Fund" from the 2000 election controversy that resulted in the US Supreme Court halting the counting of the ballots - a total of $240,000 - will be donated to the Florida Democratic Party.
