Gore Speaks On Global Warming At Ohio State

Columbus (GNN) - - Former Vice President Al Gore discussed global change
and the environment at Ohio State's 62nd annual Bownocker Lecture on
Wednesday. Combining humor, slides and video clips with hard science,
Gore documented changes in carbon dioxide concentrations and emissions,
global temperatures, and human population which are threatening earth's
climate system. He denounced those who mislead the public into believing
there is little scientific consensus about climate change in order to
protect their economic interests in fossil feuls. Despite the scope and
complexity of the problem, Gore remains optimistic it can be solved; he
provided examples of scientific achievements that were once thought
impossible, including landing a man on the moon, eradicating polio and
reducing the size of the hole in the ozone.
Gore was introduced by former Senator John Glenn (D-Ohio), who spoke at
length about Gore's successes as Vice President, as well as Gore's popular
vote win in 2000 Presidential election. Glenn criticized the Supreme
Court's role in that election, stating that "I never thought I'd see
validly cast votes not being counted." Prior to the lecture, Gore met
privately with faculty at the Byrd Polar Research Center to learn about
the climate research being conducted at Ohio State. While at the center,
Gore was presented with Ohio State's Bownocker Medal, which is given each
year to the Bownocker Lecturer in recognition of their scholarly and
professional achievements in the geological sciences.
A RealPlayer version of Gore's April 21st lecture is now available at Ohio
State University's John Glenn Institute for Public Service and Public
Policy. It runs approximately one hour and twenty minutes.
