White House "Surprised" about Criticism of 'No Child Left Behind' Education Laws
The White House continues to hold public relations events to try to reverse public opinion about President Bush's failed education law, No Child Left Behind (NCLB) -- the most recent one in Albuquerque, New Mexico. According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, 23 states have lodged some kind of formal protest against NCLB. Yet a White House official said he was "a little surprised" at the criticism from New Mexico groups and local officials who said the law is creating "chaos and turmoil" in schools.
"If NCLB was really a priority, the current administration would fully fund the program," said New Mexico Governor and Democratic Convention Chair Bill Richardson. "The existing gap among minorities in the United States education system is unacceptable. Hispanic, Native American, Asian American and African American children need more than photo ops and public relations events to achieve their goals."
