New Poll Gives Kerry a 10-Point Lead over Bush Among College Students
Washington, DC — Senator John Kerry holds a 10-point lead over George W. Bush among college students, according to a poll released Thursday by the Harvard Institute of Politics. Kerry's lead reflects an increasing anxiety among young Americans about the nation's current direction and a positive response to Kerry's outreach to young voters, including his "Compact with the Next Generation" unveiled during his five college tour this week.
Among other things, Kerry's "Compact with the Next Generation" assists recent graduates in finding new and better jobs, helps more people afford college, and engages a record number of young people in service.
"President Bush has had four years to prove that he takes the future of students in this country seriously, but he's failed every test he's been given," said College Democrats of America National President Ashley Bell. "The Bush administration has dealt serious blows to college students and their families, cutting Pell grants and vital loan programs, and racking up the biggest deficits in the history of our country with the expectation that our generation will pay for his recklessness."
According to the poll, President Bush's approval rating among students has plummeted from 61 to 47 percent over the past 6 months, and support for the war in Iraq has dropped from 58 to 49 percent. Moreover, a majority of students oppose the President's divisive constitutional marriage amendment proposal, and two-thirds believe it will be difficult to get a job after college.
Stephanie Sanchez, CDA Executive Director said, "John Kerry has consistently offered a positive, responsible vision for their future. As the debate moves into high gear, more young Americans will realize that President Bush has no record to run on and look to John Kerry for a positive change."
