Dow adds over 1600 points as investors hope coronavirus cases have peaked U.S. stocks closed sharply higher Monday, buoyed by declining numbers of deaths from COVID-19 in New York City and Europe. The Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped about 1,604 points, 7.6%, to close near 22,656, according to preliminary figures, while the S&P 500 added about 173 points, 6.9%, closing at about 2,661. The Nasdaq Composite Index rose about 535 points, 7.3%, closing near 7,908. Shares of Wayfair Inc. rocketed about 40% higher Monday after the online home goods retailer said its business had more than doubled in late March, the period when Americans started to be confined to their homes.
