U.S. adds 273,000 jobs in February, unemployment falls to 3.5%
WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) - The U.S. created 273,000 new jobs in February, but the surprisingly strong report was compiled shortly before the coronavirus contagion spread worldwide. Economists polled by MarketWatch forecast a 165,000 increase. The unemployment rate fell a notch to 3.5% and matched a 50-year low. The average wage paid to U.S. workers, meanwhile, rose 9 cents, or 0.3%, to $28.52 an hour. The 12-month rate of hourly wage gains slid to 3% from 3.1%. Hours worked each week rose 0.1 hour to 34.4 hours. The government revised the increase in new jobs in January to 273,000 from 225,000. December's gain was raised to 184,000 from 145,000.
