U.S. creates 225,000 jobs in January, unemployment rises to 3.6%
WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) - The U.S. created 225,000 new jobs in January, easily beating Wall Street's forecast and reflecting the resilience of a strong U.S. labor market. The increase in new jobs surpassed the 164,000 MarketWatch forecast. The unemployment rate inched up to 3.6% from a 50-year low of 3.5%, the government said Friday. The average wage paid to American workers, meanwhile, rose 7 cents, or 0.2%, to $28.44 an hour. The 12-month rate of hourly wage gains rose to 3.1% from a revised 3% in December. Hours worked each week were flat at 34.3 hours. The government revised the increase in new jobs in December to 147,000 from 145,000. November's gain was raised to 261,000 from 256,000. Annual revisions show a somewhat smaller increase in new jobs in 2019 than previously reported, but employment gains topped the 2 million mark for the ninth straight year.
