Hoyer Remarks at the Congressional Hispanic Caucus' "We Stand with DREAMers" Event
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) joined the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and House Democrats at an event last night to show support for DREAMers in response to President Trump's decision to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, and to urge the Speaker to bring the DREAM Act to the Floor. Below is a transcript of his remarks:
"Thank you very much, Madam Chair. This is about all of us. Not just one part of us, but all of us.
“America is an idea, America is a dream. And the dream had a cloud put over it today and I want to assure you, on behalf of Leader Pelosi, myself, Joe Crowley, the Chairman of our Caucus, other leadership in the House of Representatives, on the Democratic side, that we are going to fight every day from now until we adopt the DREAMers bill.
“It has the votes. If the DREAM Act, sponsored by Lucille Roybal-Allard and many, many, many others was put on the Floor tomorrow, it would pass.
“We have the votes. We have the votes because it’s the right thing to do. Paul Ryan said this ought not to happen. Paul Ryan has the opportunity to make sure that it doesn’t happen.
“Orrin Hatch, the senior member of the United States Senate, said this is not the right thing to do. A Republican.
“On a bipartisan basis we are going redeem the dream. We’re going to redeem the dream by passing the DREAM Act, and we will not rest until we do it.
“Thank you very much, Chairwoman Lujan-Grisham. I appreciate very much your leadership. We're with you every step of the way until success.”
