Hoyer Statement on Passage of Aid for Areas Recovering From Hurricane Harvey
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the House of Representatives passed a bill providing aid to areas of Texas and Louisiana recovering from Hurricane Harvey:
“Today, the House took an important first step to assist those affected by Hurricane Harvey. All of us have seen the images of devastation and heard stories of heartbreak and loss, and we have witnessed scenes of heroism and selflessness, including so many random acts of kindness. I want to thank the Administration for the speed with which it sent us this funding request to aid in relief efforts, and now I urge the Senate to take up this legislation and send it to the President’s desk. Furthermore, I hope – and expect – that the Administration will continue to work closely with state and local authorities in the impacted areas and send Congress additional funding requests as their needs become clearer.
“All of us have a joint responsibility as Americans to help the victims of Hurricane Harvey recover and rebuild in the wake of this tragedy. As we keep a careful eye on Hurricane Irma, I hope the Administration will take whatever steps are necessary to ensure that communities in Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands are well prepared and well equipped to meet the challenge that storm now poses. I thank my colleagues on both sides of the aisle who worked hard to bring this supplemental funding bill quickly to the Floor and all who joined me in voting for its passage.”
