Hoyer, Congressional Hispanic Caucus Announce Process to Launch a Discharge Petition to Force a Vote on the DREAM Act
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) and Congressional Hispanic Caucus Chair Michelle Lujan Grisham (NM-01) released the following statement announcing that House Democrats are beginning the process to launch a discharge petition that would force a vote on the bipartisan, bicameral DREAM Act, which would provide a permanent solution to protect DREAMers. Tonight, H. Res. 508 was introduced, which discharges H.R. 1084, the Today's American Dream Act, and substitutes the text of H.R. 3440, the DREAM Act. Under House Rules, a discharge petition on the resolution will be available for Members to sign beginning in seven legislative days:
“Tonight, House Democrats, led by the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, began the process of gathering support among Members on both sides of the aisle to bring the DREAM Act to the Floor for a vote before the end of this month. Our message to DREAMers across the country is clear: Democrats are working on their behalf and will not abandon them. The President’s decision to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program will lead to severe economic loss, an inhumane program of mass deportation, and the splitting up of American families – unless Congress takes action. A tweet from President Trump is not enough of a guarantee for those who bravely registered through DACA and now find their future uncertain. Congress must act – and act without delay.
“We are asking all Members of Congress who believe it is wrong to deport young people brought to this country as children to join us in this effort. In many cases, these DREAMers have known no other home than America. Commonsense and compassion must now prevail. Our faith and moral light ought to guide us to do right by these DREAMers, who wish to continue serving and contributing to the nation they love – the nation we share. Let us not forget that their dreams are our own: an America strong, safe, and prosperous that embodies the principle of opportunity for all.”
