Hoyer Statement on Package to Fund the Government, Provide Disaster Relief, Pay Our Nation's Bills
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the passage of a bill to fund the government, pay our nation's bills, and aid those impacted by Hurricane Harvey and help families prepare for Hurricane Irma:
“I am glad that the House has voted to forestall a government shutdown and a default on our debt obligations – all while taking action to aid those impacted by Hurricane Harvey, and prepare for Hurricane Irma. But this continuing resolution and debt limit extension are short-term solutions to long-term challenges. Democrats and Republicans need to work together in the coming weeks, through regular order and in a spirit of trust, to lift the sequester caps on appropriations so that we can invest in our shared priorities of security and opportunity for our people. This must be done before the eleventh hour of the next deadline in December.
“Furthermore, today’s legislation did not address the other pressing and dangerous challenge we now face as a result of President Trump’s reckless action this week. Congress must pass legislation to protect DREAMers and ensure that they can stay in the only country they’ve ever called home. Democrats will continue to fight on behalf of DREAMers and their families, and we have already begun the process of forcing the House to take a vote on the DREAM Act before the month is out. I hope Republicans will see the danger in failing to act on this legislation and join with us to pass the DREAM Act without delay.”
