Hoyer Statement on President Trump's Speech on Tax Reform
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on President Trump's speech on tax reform in Missouri:
"When it comes to reforming our tax code, there really isn't much debate about why we need to do it. Stepping to the podium to declare that we need tax reform does not signal leadership on this issue; rather, doing so without offering any proposals on how to achieve it is an abdication. If the President is serious about tax reform, he should focus on the how, not the why. He should clearly outline his goals and provide concrete proposals so that the American people can judge the impact of his plans on their households and businesses. Yet, every time we hear from President Trump and Congressional Republicans on this issue, they are more and more vague about their plans for the tax code.
“For tax reform to be permanent it must be bipartisan, and to be serious it must abandon the tired myth that tax cuts pay for themselves. What we heard today, however, was little more than the same old supply side hocus pocus. If the President is truly interested in tackling this challenge, I would advise him to get to work on a concrete proposal that demonstrably and directly benefits the middle class rather than pretending that cutting corporate tax rates will somehow trickle down. He ought to sit down with leaders on the issue and from the relevant committees from both parties in Congress and have a serious and honest discussion about how we can work on a bipartisan basis to achieve tax reform."
