Republicans Should Abandon Repeal and Work With Democrats to Improve the ACA
MESSAGE FROM THE DEMOCRATIC WHIP
This week, Senate Republicans released a new version of their harmful TrumpCare bill. It undermines protections for Americans with pre-existing conditions and guts protections that prohibit annual and lifetime limits. In addition, the bill still drastically cuts Medicaid, meaning millions of children, seniors in nursing homes, and Americans with disabilities would lose access to care. Democrats in Congress continue to urge Republicans to abandon repeal and instead work with Democrats to improve the Affordable Care Act for all Americans.
Republicans have also failed to pass a budget and meet that basic responsibility of governing. They are 90 days past the deadline they should have completed work on a budget. In addition, they have failed to put forward a jobs bill, a tax reform bill, or legislation to ensure our nation pays its bills. I hope Republicans will get serious about meeting these fiscal challenges and work with Democrats to address them.
Finally, I am deeply troubled by the latest news regarding President Trump's campaign and Russia. They reinforce the need to take action to hold Russia accountable for their efforts to undermine our democracy. The House ought to pass the Russian sanctions legislation that passed a month ago in the Senate. Democrats will also continue to call for an independent commission to fully investigate Russian efforts to interfere in the 2016 election and ensure it does not happen again.
Sincerely yours,
Steny H. Hoyer
