Hoyer Statement on World Refugee Day
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on United Nations World Refugee Day, which is observed today, June 20th:
“On World Refugee Day, we keep in our thoughts and prayers the millions who have been displaced by war, violence, poverty, or natural disasters, including the many Syrians who have had to flee civil war in their country. These refugees, half of whom are children, need our compassion and our care. America has always been a beacon of hope – a light to the world beckoning refugees to seek shelter on our shores. That must not change. I will continue to oppose efforts by this President and his Administration to turn desperate refugees away, to say they are not welcome to join us in our pursuit of freedom and opportunity. We must remain true to our Founders’ vision of a place where all would be welcome who wish to better their own lives and our common future.”
