Hoyer Statement on the 50th Anniversary of the Reunification of Jerusalem
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today marking the 50th anniversary of the reunification of Jerusalem:
“I join in celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of the reunification of Jerusalem today. During the Six-Day War, Israel defeated enemies bent on its destruction, and in the process made the holy city of Jerusalem whole again. After nineteen years of being denied access to holy sites in the Old City, Jews were once again able to worship at the Western Wall. Today, the city remains a place where people of all faiths can worship freely, and it stands as a symbol of the Jewish people’s commitment to rebuilding in their ancient homeland a modern democratic state that can serve as a beacon of hope to the world. I pray for the peace of Jerusalem and all who live there, and I continue to stand strongly with the Jewish State of Israel as it faces adversity in the pursuit of lasting peace and security.”
