Hoyer Statement on Immigrant Heritage Month
Hoyer: WE MUST NOT ALLOW THIS COUNTRY TO CLOSE ITS DOORS TO THE WORLD AND THOSE WHO SEEK TO JOIN US IN BUILDING AMERICA'S FUTURE
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on Immigrant Heritage Month, which is observed throughout the month of June:
"I join in marking the start of Immigrant Heritage Month, in which we celebrate the immigrant foundations of our country. As the son of an immigrant from Denmark, I am deeply proud of my own roots while grateful for the opportunities this country made possible for those seeking a better life in a new land.
"We must not allow this country to close its doors to the world and those who seek to join us in building America's future. Immigrants have always enriched this nation with their diverse experiences and their readiness to work hard toward building stronger communities, and history has shown us the benefits to our economy and national security of smart immigration policies that lead to full citizenship. I call on President Trump, who has shamefully disparaged immigrants and threatens to ban refugees from seeking shelter in the United States, to recognize this truth that is at the heart of what makes our country great."
