Hoyer Statement on President Trump's Election Commission
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after President Trump announced the creation of a commission to investigate voter fraud:
“If the White House intends to create a commission to investigate voter suppression in this country, I hope its focus will be on the actual suppression of the voting rights of minorities, seniors, and students in states where Republican lawmakers have imposed barriers to ballot access since the terrible Shelby v. Holder Supreme Court ruling in 2013.
"Wasting time on witch hunts for cases of supposed voter fraud that do not exist is a clear attempt to distract from the investigation of possible ties between the Russian government and the Trump campaign. Calling a nation’s voting system and the trustworthiness of its elections into question is the hallmark of despots and would-be autocrats.
"We must not tolerate this here in the United States, and I continue to call on Congress to establish an independent, bipartisan commission to investigate the extent to which Russia sought to silence the voices of American voters by swaying the 2016 election in the direction of its favored candidate – and whether that candidate and his campaign knew of those efforts and participated in them.”
