Hoyer Statement on the Reintroduction of the Equality Act
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the reintroduction of the Equality Act:
“Today, I’m proud to join Rep. David Cicilline and the LGBT Equality Caucus to cosponsor the Equality Act in the 115th Congress. Our bill, which is long overdue, extends the protections of America’s bedrock civil rights laws, including the landmark 1964 Civil Rights Act, to LGBT Americans and their families. Doing so would prevent discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity when it comes to education, employment, housing, credit, jury service, and public accommodations – the same protections all other Americans enjoy under federal law.
“Over the first hundred days of his presidency, Donald Trump has broken promise after promise to LGBT Americans, removing critical federal guidance protecting transgender students and appointing a number of officials to senior government roles who hold virulently discriminatory views against LGBT people. Today’s reintroduction of the Equality Act will send a strong message that there are many in Congress who will not tolerate such actions and will not stand idly by as LGBT Americans and their families face discrimination. I urge Republican House leaders to allow this bill to come to the Floor without delay so all Americans can see where their Representatives stand when it comes to ensuring that all are treated equally in our country.”
