Hoyer Statement on Mark Green's Withdrawal of Consideration for Secretary of the Army
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after President Trump's nominee for Secretary of the Army, Mark Green, announced that he is withdrawing himself from consideration for the position:
"I am pleased that Mark Green has withdrawn his name from consideration to be the top civilian overseeing the United States Army. His statements and his very disturbing history when it comes to discrimination against LGBT Americans made him ineligible for that post. I was proud to stand with my colleagues, members of the public, and advocacy groups in raising strong concerns that someone who promotes intolerance should not be serving at the highest levels of our Defense Department. I urge the President to select a nominee for this position who can command the respect of all our troops, including the many LGBT individuals serving in uniform with distinction."
