Hoyer Statement on Congressional Budget Office Score of Amended TrumpCare Bill
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Congressional Budget Office released its score of House Republicans’ TrumpCare bill with the addition of their Manager's Amendment:
“If Republican leaders were hoping that the Congressional Budget Office’s cost and impact estimate for their amended health care bill would make any Member more likely to support it, I suspect they are now sorely disappointed. The estimate released a short while ago shows that the new version of their bill would have only half the deficit savings of the original version as it gives a trillion-dollar tax cut to the wealthiest. At the same time, it does nothing to lessen the number of Americans who will lose their health coverage, to mitigate the 24-29% average rise in premiums for consumers in each of the first two years, to remove the ‘age tax’ that dramatically increases costs for those ages fifty to sixty-four, or to address sharp increases in out-of-pocket costs that patients would face under the Republican plan.
“There must come a point where this bill’s proponents accept that there is no way to salvage this legislation and set it aside. Republicans have had seven years to come up with a workable replacement for the Affordable Care Act, and the best they could muster was a bill that kicks 24 million people off their coverage and forces millions of others to pay more for less. It’s time to call this bill what it is: a complete failure.”
