Hoyer Statement on Chairman Nunes' Decision to Cancel a Public Hearing on Russian Interference in the 2016 Election
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the decision by House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes to cancel a public hearing scheduled for Tuesday on Russia's interference in the 2016 election:
“Clearly, Chairman Nunes and the Trump White House are scared of what the public might learn, and by canceling a public hearing on Russian involvement in the election they are denying the American people the full scope of information that might come forward. Ranking Member Schiff is right: the circumstances of Chairman Nunes’s actions require all of us to read carefully between the lines. His denial of a public hearing, his visit to the White House to share information with the President that no one else – even Members of the Intelligence Committee – has seen or verified, and his role with the Trump transition all disqualify Chairman Nunes from serving as an impartial overseer of a Congressional investigation on these matters. Lingering questions about potential ties between Russia and persons close to the President has cast a gray cloud over the entire Administration, and I urge Chairman Nunes and Republicans on the Committee to join in supporting the creation of a bipartisan, independent commission to look into Russia’s efforts to undermine our election and subvert our democracy.”
