Hoyer Statement on International Women's Day
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer released the following statement today in recognition of International Women’s Day:
“Americans across the country today marked International Women’s Day. Some participated in ‘A Day Without Women’ to protest inequality and President Trump’s shameful statements about women and how he treats them. Others volunteered in their communities or took time to mentor girls to reach for their dreams. Many observed this day by sharing stories in person or online about great women in our history or the heroic struggles endured by those who marched for the vote, for equal opportunity, and against gender discrimination. I marked this day by wearing red in solidarity with women across the country and standing with my colleagues in the Democratic Caucus – men and women together – to fight for equal pay, women’s access to affordable health care, and tougher protections against domestic violence.
“These times challenge us in ways we could not have foreseen, and it has been America’s women who have taken the lead in building a grassroots movement to protect the rights and freedoms we share. When I participated in the Women’s March on January 21, I saw the energy and resolve of women joining together to reject sexism, racism, xenophobia, homophobia, and transphobia, many walking arm-in-arm with strangers from different walks of life but united in a shared determination to persist against injustice. I hope the spirit of that day and this one will continue to imbue women and men across our country with a commitment to engage with one another as Americans and to raise their voices together for progress.”
