Hoyer Statement on President Trump's First 50 Days
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on President Donald Trump's first 50 days in office:
“Over the past fifty days that Donald Trump has been in office, his presidency has been completely out of touch with American values and the responsibility our government has to serve the American people, and he has failed to deliver on any of the promises he made to improve Americans’ lives and safety.
“He promised to provide ‘insurance for everybody’ that is ‘much less expensive’ and ‘much better’ than what is now available thanks to the Affordable Care Act. Instead, he’s thrown his support behind a Republican bill that would kick up to 20 million Americans off their health coverage, undermine employer-based coverage, and force millions of Americans to pay more for less.
“He promised voters that he would be a ‘jobs president,’ but he hasn’t put forward a single jobs bill or detailed plan of how he proposes to put more Americans to work or help our workers get ahead.
“He’s said he wants to make America safer, but his actions have already put the American people and our troops at higher risk, empowering ISIS recruitment through his dangerous Muslim ban and alienating the allies we need to keep our enemies in check. The President and his advisors possibly colluded with Russia – a foreign adversary – during last year’s election, which Congress ought to investigate through an independent commission. Already, his national security advisor has been fired amid serious questions about conflicts of interest. Perhaps most troubling, the President and his advisors have done everything possible to distract attention away and avoid answering questions about their ties to Russia. But the American people deserve answers, and we will continue to demand them and insist on accountability.
“In November, Speaker Ryan said the Donald Trump will ‘be judged on the results of this Administration.’ Fifty days after taking office, Donald Trump has not delivered any positive results for the American people, only harsh and sometimes irrational rhetoric, widening controversy, and fostering an atmosphere of deep division.
“Democrats will continue to hold this Administration and its Republican allies in Congress accountable for their actions as well as the truthfulness of their statements. We will continue to stand up for the plurality of Americans who voted against the dangerous Trump-Republican agenda and fight for jobs and opportunities for all Americans.”
