Hoyer: Executive Order Makes Our Country Less Safe, Emboldens Terrorists
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement regarding the national security implications of President Trump’s executive order on new vetting procedures for refugees and immigrants entering the United States:
"The executive order President Trump signed on Friday makes our country less safe and emboldens terrorist groups like ISIS. By imposing bans on refugees based on their faith, ethnicity, or national origin, the Trump Administration is providing ISIS and other extremists with a potent propaganda and recruiting tool, playing right into their hands, particularly for the kind of individuals susceptible to homegrown radicalization that refugee bans cannot defend against. I join with the many U.S. military combat veterans and national security experts in condemning this move, which not only undermines our values but threatens Americans' safety. Now that federal judges have stayed key provisions of the President's order, I urge him to heed our senior national security and defense experts and take a different approach."
