Hoyer Statement on the Firing of Acting Attorney General Sally Yates
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement tonight after President Trump fired Acting Attorney General Sally Yates:
"Tonight's firing of Acting Attorney General Sally Yates represents an alarming step for an administration already raising serious questions about its competence to govern. Terminating the only Senate-confirmed official at the Department of Justice who can sign FISA warrants simply because the President disagrees with her interpretation of the law is reckless and shortsighted, and it makes our nation less safe. The American people need to consider whether President Trump simply plans to dismiss anyone with whom he disagrees, and I hope my Republican colleagues stand up and express concern over this as well. This is not the way government works in a Constitutional democracy such as ours. The President needs to recognize that there is a difference between being a boss and being a leader."
