Hoyer Statement on Ruling Against President Trump's Muslim Ban
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement in response to a nationwide ruling halting President Trump's Muslim ban:
"I am deeply concerned by President Trump's attack on Judge James Robart, which shows a complete disregard for both an independent judiciary and the Constitution. While the President may not like the way a judge rules on any given issue, we must always respect the judicial process and those who execute it. The rule of law and the separation of powers are hallmarks of our nation. Attacking a judge - who was appointed by President George W. Bush - is not acceptable behavior from the President of the United States.
"At the same time, I am encouraged to hear that the Department of Homeland Security is suspending all actions to implement the Muslim ban executive order, and that the Department of State has reversed the cancellation of visas. This is how our government ought to work, with the courts weighing the actions taken by the President and our agencies following the decisions made by our independent courts."
