Hoyer: New Report on the Impact of Repealing the ACA Ought to Alarm All Americans
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Congressional Budget Office released a new report detailing how Republican efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act without immediately offering a replacement would have severe consequences for millions of Americans:
“Today’s report by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office underscores why so many Americans from across the political spectrum are outraged by Republican plans to move forward with a repeal of the Affordable Care Act without a workable replacement. The report finds that monthly premiums for Americans in the individual market would increase by at least 20% in the first year and double by 2026 – and that 32 million Americans would lose their insurance coverage by 2026, including 18 million in the first year of repeal alone. It is a damning indictment of Congressional Republicans’ irresponsible and dangerous repeal proposal.
"In addition to earlier estimates that the budget resolution passed by Republicans in order to repeal the Affordable Care Act would raise deficits by $10 trillion over the next decade, this report ought to alarm all Americans who care deeply about the future of health care in our country and of our economy, no matter their political affiliation. House Democrats will continue to oppose efforts to strip health insurance away from tens of millions, raise costs, and balloon deficits and our national debt through partisan efforts at repealing the Affordable Care Act.”
