Hoyer Statement After House Republicans Reverse Decision to Undermine the Office of Congressional Ethics
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after House Republicans reversed course and removed an amendment to the House Rules package that would have severely undermined the Office of Congressional Ethics:
“Eliminating the independence of the Office of Congressional Ethics, as House Republicans proposed to do without notice or debate, would have been a dangerous and ill-conceived move. Americans were appropriately shocked and concerned by this decision, and Republicans had to back down from their plan as a result. Members of Congress must continue to be held to the highest ethical standards, and an independent ethics office is an important part of ensuring full accountability. Not a good start for House Republicans."
