Hoyer Statement on Legislation to Impose Sanctions on Foreign States Found to Have Interfered in U.S. Elections
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement after House Foreign Affairs Committee Ranking Member Eliot Engel (NY-16) and Rep. Gerry Connolly (VA-11) introduced legislation to impose sanctions on any foreign entity found to have interfered in a U.S. election. All 19 Democrats on the Committee are original cosponsors of the legislation:
“The legislation introduced yesterday by House Foreign Affairs Committee Ranking Member Engel and Representative Connolly reflects a deep concern in Congress and among the American people that a foreign power acted to undermine our election and influence it in favor of a particular candidate. I fully support efforts to impose punitive sanctions against any foreign state that tries to meddle in our democracy. Evidence of Russian interference in our election is overwhelming, and our intelligence agencies have now made it clear that President Vladimir Putin used hacking and other illicit activities to influence the November 8 election. Congress has a responsibility to investigate these Russian activities fully, and I reject efforts by some Republicans who wish to delay, minimize, or oppose an investigation in the face of significant evidence of an outright assault on our political system by a foreign adversary.”
