Hoyer Statement on the 2016 Election
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement on the 2016 election:
“The election is over, and Donald Trump has been elected as our next President. If our country is to be successful in the years ahead, we must work together where we can.
“There were stark differences in this campaign, and they will not disappear overnight. However, it will be important for both sides – each representing 50% of the electorate – to work together constructively to serve all of the American people. I believe Democrats stand ready to meet that responsibility.
“I congratulate Secretary Clinton and Senator Kaine for all they have done throughout their lives on behalf of others. I want to thank them for the strength, substance, and commitment they both brought to the campaign. I am proud of them and of the positive message they shared with America. I am also proud of Secretary Clinton’s gracious concession and her statement of support for President-Elect Trump.
“Abraham Lincoln said of his philosophy of service, ‘I do the best I know how, the very best I can, and I mean to keep on doing so until the end.’ That, I believe, is our only option as a nation. And, consistent with our values and our vision of an America in which all people believe their government is working for them and is on their side, we must all continue to do the ‘very best we can’ to achieve that goal.”
