Hoyer: Republican Hypocrisy on Zika is Astounding
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a travel warning to areas in Florida where the Zika virus has spread:
“All Americans ought to be concerned about the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s travel warning for part of Miami where fourteen cases of the Zika virus are thought to have been spread through local mosquito-borne transmission. Republicans’ failure to work in a bipartisan manner to tackle this urgent crisis has serious consequences for our nation’s public health as well as for local economies impacted.
"It is outrageous that some Republicans are now calling for Congress to come back into session in order to pass a Zika funding bill when it was they who brought a partisan bill to the Floor last month that had no chance of advancing and then left town without making sure Congress did its job. It is inconceivable that Republicans in Congress would block real, responsible Zika funding to protect pregnant women out of an insistence on including provisions that deny these same women the right to access reproductive health care. The hypocrisy on Zika is astounding, and the latest developments in Miami demand that Congress act on a clean Zika bill that isn’t laden with Republicans’ partisan riders. House Democrats will continue to insist that Congress take action on a clean Zika bill as soon as possible.”
