Hoyer Statement on July Jobs Report
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Department of Labor released its jobs report for July:
“According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, July marked the seventieth consecutive month of positive job growth since the beginning of our economic recovery. This is something we can be proud of, but we must not rest until all Americans are able to access the opportunities that a good job and a secure place in our middle class provide. While 217,000 private sector jobs were created last month and private sector employees saw a modest pay increase, improving economic security for many American families, Congress can make a big difference in the lives of millions more by ensuring that all our workers have access to paid family leave, equal pay for women performing equal work, and the promise of a higher minimum wage.
“House Democrats are fighting for all of these in Congress, and we’re going to keep promoting our opportunity agenda that will help Americans not just get by but get ahead. Our new Make It In America plan calls for expanding innovation and entrepreneurship, closing the skills gap, building a twenty-first century infrastructure, and reducing barriers to manufacturing here in our country. We can’t achieve these goals, which help create more good jobs, if Congress continues to be mired in dysfunction and partisan gridlock, which is why Democrats are also pushing for commonsense reforms that will make government work again for those it serves.
“I urge House Republicans to stop being a source of gridlock and to stop telling American businesses and workers they’re on their own. Only by working together and striving for smart, strategic investments in growth can Congress help all our people reach for a twenty-first century American Dream and secure a better future for themselves and their children.”
